The Wonderful Health Benefits of Tea

Tea Health BenefitsTea is the second most consumed beverage in the world, second only to water, and for good reason. Teas are tasty, relaxing, healthful, and drinking a cup of tea is a time-honored way of socializing with others. People have been drinking tea for thousands of years.

True tea, which means beverages made from the leaves of the tea plant, was first discovered in China, but cultures around the world make their own versions of tea from other plants. For instance, there is rooibos from Africa and yerba mate from South America. As you explore smoothie recipes and healthful ingredients, consider using tea as your liquid base. With teas you can add both interesting flavors and important health benefits.

Creamy Coconut Cashew Elixir

Creamy Coconut Cashew ElixirI’m back with another tickle your taste buds elixir. This one is extra frothy and delicious thanks to the cashews.

Cashews are a great smoothie and elixir ingredient that I often forget about. While soaking the cashews I picked up from my local co-op I remembered how well they blend in elixirs. They lend to that signature elixir frothiness while providing a good source of calories. If you’re consuming an elixir for breakfast it’s important to get enough calories to sustain yourself until lunch.

Bulletproof Elixir

Bulletproof ElixirThe bulletproof executive provided the inspiration for this recipe. While I don’t regularly drink coffee, I love his bulletproof coffee recipe, usually substituting my favorite tea.

On the mornings I don’t feel like a smoothie, which is often the case in the winter, I heat up some tea and make an elixir. Think of an elixir as a mocha or latte, creamy and rich, with enough calories to keep you going until lunch.

I don’t have anything against coffee and have read several studies expounding its health benefits, it’s just not my thing. I prefer herb/medicinal teas or if I need a pick-me-up, something milder such as green tea, Yerba Mate, or Guayusa.

Aloe Vera Lemonade Smoothie

Aloe Vera Lemonade SmoothieI recently purchased aloe vera gel to use in a couple body butter recipes, but made sure to save a little for smoothies :)

In the past I’ve procured fresh aloe leaves, filleted, and scraped out the gel for use in smoothies. As it turns out this aloe vera gel is much easier to work with.

Detoxing with Smoothies

Detoxing with SmoothiesDetox is a trendy word in health and beauty circles. It is short for detoxification, which refers to removing toxins from your body or cleansing your body of pollutants and chemicals. Detoxing is an integral part of maintaining and achieving vibrant health, and can also be a quick route to losing weight.

We’re bombarded by chemicals and toxins on a daily basis. These come from the foods you eat, the air you breathe, the beauty products you apply to your body, and many other things you come into contact with. Ideally, we’d avoid coming into contact with all the bad guys, but that’s not possible. Our best bet is to reduce exposure and consume foods that help our body get the toxins out.

My personal detoxification strategy is to consume foods that bind to and help pass toxins out of the body, as well as those that support the body’s natural detoxification efforts. You can accomplish both of these at the same time with smoothies.

Chocolate Coconut Elixir

Chocolate Coconut ElixirIt’s time to unleash the elixirs! This is the first in what will be many elixir recipes.

If you don’t always feel like a smoothie during the cold winter months, you may gravitate towards elixirs like I have. These warm, frothy beverages deliver just as much nutrition as a smoothie, but feel more appropriate when it’s cold out.

Slight nuances differentiate an elixir from a smoothie. Elixirs are often thought of as medicinal drinks because they’re typically made with a curative tea. You’ll want to choose a tea for your elixirs based on a particular health concern you’d like to address.
